Little Christmas Tree

Here's a little Christmas tree with a big star on top of it. The top one is a jpeg with a sky blue background, and the one on the bottom is a transparent png that you can put into your own theme.

OK, how do you make a transparent PNG?

A png can be produced from a graphics application that supports it. When I save a bitmap image from Inkscape, it generates a png by default. Png is a nice type of file because it offers the option of a transparent background layer and supports a full color range. Gif allows a transparent background, but is limited to just over 200 colors and is not very nice looking. Unfortunately, not every browser supports the transparent layer in png, so it doesn't seem to be in wide use on the web. Modern browsers like Firefox are fine, but older versions of Explorer have a problem with pngs.

PNG is an excellent image file format under the right conditions. To learn more about png, check out the PNG Home Site.
